Cable thieves defeated
Congratulations to residents who this morning intercepted a gang making their getaway with about 100m of heavy Telecommunications cable in Doringkloof Spruit. The cable is normally buried underground and was apparently pulled from a Telkom manhole.
Residents alerted by barking dogs and Kiewits, spotted the suspects dragging the cables near the bird-hide at 02h10.
The community mobilised and one suspect was arrested after a chase by residents in the spruit, and handed over to SAPS. The suspect was also found in possession of some light hand-tools in a backpack.
The picture shows the thick multi-core telecomms cable that was recovered.
We thank those who responded with torches and radios to stand perimeter and help search through the wet grasses at 03h30 in the morning.
