Good afternoon Friends

Happily spring has arrived and nature is celebrating!  The spruit is full of trees shooting new leaves and birds checking out nesting sites.

FEEDBACK:

  1. We have had some successful clean-ups in the spruit over the last few months.  Glover Bridge and Zambezi Bridge in particular – not only collecting litter but also clearing debris from under these bridges in anticipation of the coming rains (including at least 5 mattresses!)  This was a big job and I am very grateful for the help I received.
  2. Fire – the area upstream of Glover Bridge was set alight by a passerby.  Luckily the fire was contained with help from the community.  It brings to question again about regular, controlled burns by Nature Conservation.  Setting up in an urban area is not easy, but we will discuss this with Alexander.

SAVE THE DATE:

  1. 5th October 2024:  BAT WALK: Teresa Kearney (Curator of Ditsong National Museum, small mammal collection) and her husband Ernest (director of AfricanBats) will be doing an evening bat walk in the spruit with eco-locators and hopefully catch some bats to inspect up close.

It has been many years since we enjoyed this privilege with them.

The time will be confirmed.  Everyone is welcome to join in, it is very interesting!

If it rains that evening, the event will be postponed till the next week.

  1. 19TH October 2024: FODS AGM @10h00  in the Irene office in Stopford Road, Irene.  Alexander Heunis from Tshwane Nature Conservation will be our guest speaker on the topic of “Life as a Conservationist”.  He has vast experience in many aspects of Nature Conservation (including game capture in the Kruger Park), and we look forward to hearing about it.  THIS MEETING IS OPEN TO ALL!  PLEASE JOIN US.

I hope you have a great week ahead.

Regards

Penny
