DORINGKLOOF NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Crime in Doringkloof has been down for the last ten weeks or so, with a crime rate of less than one incident a week.  This is the first time we have achieved this rate since we started.

House burglaries and car thefts off the pavements have been our major crime incidents while petty theft, such as bicycles being stolen outside the shops in Sonja Street, being another trend.

Leaving a vehicle parked on the pavement is inviting someone to steal it.  Patrolling against this type of crime is also beyond our resources.  Please park vehicles in the yard.

However, while our crime maybe down, we are also aware of the following/ Maar, terwyl ons misdaad miskien af is, is ons ook bewus van die volgende:

1.   Not all crime is being reported, either to the coordinator or to crime@doringkloof.net.  This throws out our ability to determine ways and means of curbing crime.  Please inform us of any crime should you have been involved.  The more information we have the better able we will be to prevent crime.

2.    A universal trend is that as crime decreases, residents start to relax and pay less attention to preventing crime.  The net result is that crime then again starts to increase.  Lyttelton is being heavily targeted by criminals at the moment and if our experience is anything to go by, they will soon move south to us.  The DNW needs your active involvement whatever the situation.  When you hear of crime in your immediate vicinity, go out and observe and report what you see.   The scouts and criminals must know that we are aware of them.  It means nothing if you just report a suspicious vehicle or person and then do nothing further.

STRYD TEEN MISDAAD IN DORINGKLOOF

It is interesting to note that most suburbs call their crime-prevention organisations ‘CPF’s.  These CPFs seem to be made up of groups of people who act more like the police.   We, on the other hand, have elected to call ourselves a neighbourhood watch, and with good reason.  The most obvious reason is that the emphasis with us is on “neighbours looking out for each other”!  We are all involved and perhaps this is part of our success.

Unfortunately there are residents who believe that the neighbourhood watch is somehow a volunteer security company, similar to the many private security companies that operate in our suburb.   If this is your view then perhaps you should consider signing up with them.  However, if you are serious about security and wish to do something about it, then the DNW is there for you.

For those people who have recently joined the DNW, the idea that produced the DNW was, and still is, that if a neighbour calls a crime incident on the radio, that the neighbours immediately respond in the best way possible   When a resident some time ago called in that he was the victim of a robbery, the street soon swarmed with neighbours coming out in support.   After this incident we did not have a robbery for four or five years in the whole of Doringkloof.   Please – get to know your neighbours and make sure that are part of the DNW, i.e. have a radio.

To continue with our success we need all of us to get involved.  If you hear the radio then do not ignore it – listen and if required – react.  By the way, we are taking steps to reduce the unessential chatter on the radio.
